No—birds can’t taste capsaicin (the compound that makes peppers spicy), so it doesn’t bother them at all. They’ll eat it just like regular seed. Peppers naturally contain antioxidants and other beneficial plant compounds.
Does it really keep squirrels away?
Yes—squirrels can definitely taste the heat, and they avoid it after just one try. It doesn’t harm them, but it does convince them to look elsewhere for an easier snack. That means more seed stays in your feeder for the birds.
Will the spice wash off in the rain?
No—the spice coating is designed to stick to the seed, so it stays effective in normal outdoor conditions. However, like any bird seed, it’s best used in a sheltered feeder to keep it fresh longer.
